So how does the Hot Springs Fishing Challenge work?
The challenge will run for three months from 6AM on May 1 to 5PM on July 31. Prior to the challenge’s opening day, 71 fish will be tagged and released in undisclosed locations on Lake Hamilton and Lake Catherine. 20 of the tags will be worth a $500 prize, 46 will be worth $1,000, four will be worth $5,000 and one will be worth the grand prize of $15,000.
The grand prize fish—affectionately known as Big Al—has only been caught once in the competition’s seven-year history.
During Free Fishing Weekend, which runs from June 8 to June 10, anyone who catches a $500 fish will have their prize doubled to $1,000. If Big Al hasn’t been caught by June 1, the challenge’s organizers will begin revealing clues about his location as well.
We look forward to this event every year, and both residents and non-residents of Hot Springs are encouraged to participate! All you have to do is step outside your cottage and cast your line into the serene waters of Lake Hamilton. Be sure to book your reservation soon—summer will be here before we know it!
